Fashion is more than just clothing; it’s a language, a statement, an identity. Few embody this philosophy as seamlessly as Precious, a stylist and creative director whose passion for fashion is deeply rooted in personal history, cultural nostalgia, and a desire to create art that speaks. In our conversation for Women in Culture, we explore her creative journey, inspirations, and her relentless commitment to making fashion not only look good but feel meaningful.
The Spark: A Childhood Fashion Obsession
Like many fashion greats, Precious's journey began early. Fashion wasn’t just a hobby—it was a way of life.
“I remember faking sick because I didn’t like the outfit my mom picked out,” she recalls, laughing. “Imagine my shock when the next day came and I was still expected to wear yesterday’s outfit.”
These early moments shaped her understanding of personal style as more than just aesthetics. It was about autonomy, confidence, and self-expression. Growing up, fashion was everywhere in her life: helping her mom pick out club outfits, obsessing over Limited Too, spending hours crafting Sims characters with perfect wardrobes, and even running a men’s fashion blog on Tumblr.
“I couldn’t wait to be grown so I could dress up,” she says. And now, that childhood anticipation has transformed into a career that blends creativity with a keen eye for detail.
Inspiration: The Past as a Creative Muse
For Precious, inspiration comes from an array of sources: TV shows, music, movies, emotions, moods, colors, even architecture. But most notably, she is drawn to the past.
“I feel like the novelty and exclusivity of fashion back then made people care about the details a lot more than they do today,” she explains. “Also, watching my mom dress up for the club—I’ve never seen that lady walk out in flats, and to this day you will not catch me in the club with flats on.”
This nostalgic reverence for the past informs her work, bringing a unique perspective to modern styling by integrating timeless elements with fresh, contemporary looks.
A Project Close to Her Heart
Every creative has that one project that feels deeply personal. For Precious, it’s a recent project that encompasses not just styling but also creative direction, hair, makeup, and modeling.
“This project feels like my first baby,” she says. “The person I’m collaborating with is a creative director and photographer who grew up in the same city as me. We went to the same high school, and I love his work!”
The collaboration represents a full-circle moment: two creatives from the same background coming together to create something innovative and meaningful.
The Drive to Innovate
In an industry as competitive as fashion, staying inspired and innovative is a challenge. But for Precious, the motivation comes from a mix of passion and self-assuredness.
“Honestly, my ego and my love for fashion and beauty,” she admits. “There’s only one of me. I just love seeing beauty, and a lot of times I feel like I’m the only one with the visions that I have.”
For her, envisioning and executing creative ideas isn’t just about personal satisfaction. It’s about sharing something visually striking that makes others pause, reflect, and feel inspired.
Balancing Creativity and Business
The fashion industry demands more than just creativity—it requires business acumen and the ability to juggle multiple roles. Precious understands this balancing act well.
“I used to want to be a fashion designer,” she says. “I still like to design clothes, but my focus is on styling. Sometimes I get to design something for a client I’m styling, but my main goal is always styling. When I feel nourished in that venture, I’ll shift my focus onto another.”
Her ability to compartmentalize and focus allows her to stay productive without feeling overwhelmed—a crucial skill in an industry where creative burnout is common.
The Role of Mentorship (or Lack Thereof)
Many creatives credit mentors for their growth, but Precious’s journey has been largely self-driven.
“A mentor is not part of my journey right now,” she says. “I would love to have one in the future, but as of now, I’ve just been learning as I go and through my experience. I’m still at the beginning of my journey.”
This self-sufficiency speaks to her resilience. While mentorship can be invaluable, sometimes the most powerful lessons come from direct experience, trial and error, and personal growth.
Defining Personal Style
Style is deeply personal, and for Precious, it has evolved significantly over time.
“Today, I would describe my style as sexy, fun, and experimental,” she says. “There’s a lot of things I wouldn’t be caught dead in, but at the same time, there’s a lot I would definitely wear.”
This fearless approach to fashion makes her work dynamic and fresh. She embraces experimentation, pushing boundaries while staying true to her aesthetic.
The Influence of Place: Houston & the South
Although Precious has spent the last four years in Texas, she doesn’t attribute much of her style evolution to Houston’s fashion scene.
“The South isn’t new to me—I was born and raised in Florida,” she says. “Each city and state has its own thing, but I can’t say Texas has shaped my approach to fashion.”
That said, she has embraced certain aspects of Southern style. “I don’t think I’d own a pair of cowboy boots or hats if I was still living in Florida,” she admits.
Trends and What Excites Her Now
In an ever-changing industry, staying inspired is key. Right now, she’s particularly drawn to color.
“I love bright, saturated colors. It’s like colors are the new black,” she says. “I love incorporating pops of color into an outfit and contrasting colors against each other.”
This love for color aligns with the recent resurgence of bold, statement-making fashion, where vibrant hues dominate runways and street style alike.
Styling isn’t just about putting together outfits—it’s about bringing someone’s vision to life. When working with clients, Precious approaches the process with intention and a deep understanding of personal identity.
“I always do a deep dive through their Instagram,” she says. “The way a person presents themselves on social media tells you not only who they are but who they’re wanting to be.”
This insight allows her to craft looks that feel authentic to her clients rather than imposing her own aesthetic onto them. “I let them know I’m here to serve them. They run the show—I’ll give my opinions, of course—but I’m here to help them confidently express who they are.”
For those looking to break into styling or creative direction, Precious offers simple but powerful advice: Just do it.
“I get so caught up in waiting for the perfect moment, making sure everything is perfect before I do XYZ,” she says. “But perfection doesn’t exist. The very people you look up to and idolize aren’t even without fault. You lose a lot of time waiting for everything to be perfect. Everyone has to start somewhere.”
Success in fashion is often equated with prestige, luxury, and influence. But for Precious, it’s about staying true to herself.
“Success to me is being able to stay true to who I am and grow authentically versus changing inauthentically because of outside factors,” she says. “I want my work to speak for me. I think that’s true success.”
Precious is more than a stylist—she’s a storyteller, a visionary, and an artist committed to making fashion meaningful. Her journey is still unfolding, but one thing is clear: she’s carving out a space for herself in the industry, on her own terms.
Through her work, she proves that fashion isn’t just about clothes. It’s about identity, evolution, and the power of self-expression. And as she continues to push creative boundaries, one thing is certain—her influence will only grow.
